An Adjective Recap

Can you imagine how boring life would be without adjectives to describe life around us? I’m thinking my little descriptive friends are pretty important so I’ve dedicated this post solely to them. Okay not really... it is just a sneaky way to show off some pictures of the Franzenfam this past week at the beach. I decided to spare you a LONG narrative and just give you a brief recap using my fun little adjective friends (and maybe an adverb or two)……

Warm

Goofy

Delicious

Wet

Adventurous

Majestic

Exhilarating

Sandy

Heavenly

Simply Wonderful!!!!

More Holidays?

South Africa has a ridiculous amount of holidays especially during the months of May and April. For example, next week- Monday, Thursday and Friday are all public holidays. The humorous thing (to me at least) is the reason Friday is a holiday is because Human Rights day fell on the same day as Good Friday. So to keep from dealing with disgruntled employees (because they "missed" a day off) the President declared this next Friday a public holiday. The kid’s school decided why even come back for 2 days so they gave students the whole week off. So un-American like eh? And they wonder why the economy is plummeting.

So with our week holiday we are heading to the coast. Thought might as well take advantage of it and hopefully soak up the last of the warm weather (praying there will be some).

My internet will be limited which equates to less blog time (boo-hoo) but I will try to check in on you all! To avoid Franzenfam withdrawals (ha!) I am inserting links to 2 of my top favorite posts.

To read Grasping Heaven, click here.
Ginger, if I am not mistaken this is the post we “met” on and I am so glad we did. Don’t worry I won’t link the post most of my other readers “started” on....but I guess I'll will give you a hint....

And to read a funny post about my Cool boy and his Cool perspective on the African culture click here.

Hope you enjoy! Be back in a week!

Can you guess...

what the temps might be on this side of the globe? Here’s a hint….

Yep…Cold, Cold & Cold!

I pulled out the winter garb and Tori let loose (nice outfit eh?). Apparently her feet are still in summer.

At least someone is happy about the frigid weather….

As for me...well I wish I could hibernate!

Meaningless Cartoons?

In another interesting conversation with my boy that must be logged for recollection….

Blake: "I know what happens when we die?"
Me: quite intrigued to hear the answer as you never know what will come out of this 6 year olds mouth. “Oh yeah, what?”
Blake: “Our spirit leaves our body and goes to heaven.”
Me: very impressed… “That is exactly right Blake!”
Blake: "You know where I learned that?"
Me: Curious yet hopeful…. "At church?”
Blake: "Nope, from Tom and Jerry"

I knew there was a catch! Apparently there is a scene where Tom’s “spirit” leaves his body and makes its way to heaven.

And I thought it was just a silly, meaningless cartoon!

Beware

...it is a meme but it is from Susan at Penless Writer so how could I say no?!

I guess I am supposed to post the rules:
1. Write your own six word memoir.
2. Post it on your blog and include a visual illustration if you want.
3. Link to the person that tagged you in your post and to the original post if possible so we can track it as it travels across the blogosphere.
4. Tag at least five more blogs with links. I am tagging the first 5 people that comment (be a sport and still comment).
5. Leave a comment on the tagged blogs with an invitation to play (I am not doing this just follow #4)

Go to penlesswriter to see hers....and mine....

They are precious in His sight!

My True Face

Sorry my Wordless Wednesday turned into Wordless Week. I did not intend to leave you in wonder. I am sure you’ve been losing sleep (hee).

There were many guesses to the true tale of my face and although the face-off facts were inconclusive, they were hard to read while keeping a straight face.

Nope not a face of anguish from mowing the lawn….it is something I just don’t do. Birth brought about more of a game face. I appreciate the extra prayers coming my way at the thought I was red in the face. As for my artistic flare well that would bring on a more perplexed face and math a definite blank face. Glad no one gave me a slap in the face. And I loved how my much needed face-lift photo brought on a meme (even though I don’t like memes but Susan for you I will do it) and a few dental comments. I hope this didn’t cause anyone to lose face and if after reading this you’ve been faced with confusion take a look at Wednesday’s comments.

It is time to face up to the truth as I am sure this post is leaving you blue in the face. An uncontrollable urge comes over me when I am face-to-face with this adorable face……..

…and squeezing those little cheeks is sure to turn my long face any day! Yep that is the truth about the silly face photo.

Well with my poker face revealed I hope you are no longer in wonderment but that things are now as plain as the nose on your face!

An Honest Take

A recent conversation with my 6 year old son…

Me: "Do you like having a younger sister?"
Blake: "NO!"
Me: "Why not?"
Blake: "She is annoying!"
Me: "Do you like having an older sister?"
Blake: "Yes"
Me: "So she is not annoying?"
Blake: "Yes, but not as much."

Well there you have it...Blake’s take on his sisters. At least he is honest!
Deep down he adores them both and they adore him!

Messy Ministry

We’ve had a small team here this week from the USA working with us in various ministry endeavors. Yesterday, we ventured out on a little work project. We spent time in a preschool in one of the big squatter camps. The team had some Easter activities planned for the kids, Skyler led the kids in fun songs and for the main event we painted the classrooms.

I hadn’t really planned on my kiddos getting involved with the painting aspect so they were not appropriately dressed in “ruinable clothing.” Well there was no deterring them….bright yellow, messy paint, “Come on mom, this is ministry right?” They got me and ministry got messy….

Tori loved it and the team was so good to just paint over her contribution when she was finished.

Skyler chose the careful route as she was too cool to wear a garbage bag smock.

Blake…found messy ministry to be his favorite (shocker).

As previously mentioned Rich and I recently celebrated our 14th wedding anniversary so for my gift he got me some “Spa time” (not to mention he was still making up for leaving me for a month..hee). This is why I typically NEVER get manicures or even paint my nails for that matter…….

Nice hue of yellow don't ya think? Yeah, I’ve learned that a mother of 3 kids and manicures don’t go hand-in-hand…ha!

All in all it was a fabulous day for everyone involved and messy ministry takes the cake hands down to a messy french manicure!

Who's Footing the Bill

I realize I am a bit behind in posts as I am only now posting about Easter. Hey, at least you were spared from my 14 wedding anniversary post as it took place 2 weeks ago. In case my non-post is cause for worry, know that things are good and we plan on going another 14 years at which time we will re-evaluate things….only kidding- we are in it for the long haul!

Back to Easter….Like most things Easter is celebrated differently here. You won’t find eggs being boiled, colored or hunted…or even white for that matter. You won’t find bunnies and baskets…okay you probably could but not as a major Easter theme. No pastel colored candy, plastic eggs or kid’s adorned in new Easter attire. No Springtime (which is most of what the prior all relates to) and NO work on Good Friday or Easter Monday. Fortunately, you will find Christ Risen!

All those things are not typically found in South African households however ALL were found in the Franzen household….with the exception of white eggs.

I’m not ready to let go of familiar Easter traditions especially when someone else is footin' the bill! Every Easter thing was because of someone's graciousness and love.....

Easter Attire

all the way down to the shoes....

Brought to us by Grandma J

Easter baskets, their contents (both grannies), candy, plastic eggs and dye

Brought to us by Grandma B

A glorious promise of a Resurrected & Eternal Life

Brought to us by Jesus

How grateful we are to and for those footing the Easter bill!

My Big Brother

When I think about big brothers there is so much that could pen the pages from my own experience. I could tell you about the times my big brothers (I have 2) locked me in a dark closet when my parents went out. Or about being told that a wind-up putt putt car would make for a wonderful head massage only to wind up with a 5 inch hair cut.

Or on the flip side I could share of when my sweet big brother, Andy (almost 4 yrs older than me) pretended to be my fairy God mother (or perhaps father would be a more appropriate fit) and spoiled me for days with an assortment of surprises. Or how he showed up at the hair salon, where I was getting my “do” done, with roses on my wedding day….something to this day I don’t think he realizes touched me deeply.

The former experiences built my resilience but the latter are the beginning of fond memories of what my big brother has become. Andy, or AJ as we call him, in my book (or post) would be defined as generous, smart (I could have said “anal” but I am being nice in this post..hee), and thoughtful with a great sense of humor we seem to share….and are probably the only 2 to appreciate.

He loves and serves the Lord, his wife and 4 beautiful children and years ago he developed a heart for missions. I recently blogged about my African journey and how it’s revelation happened overtime. What I did not mention was another revelation we never imagined. While my brother represents the Lord in Corporate America as a CPA and partner in a growing firm he also plays a large part in the Great Commission as a Supporter.

Little did we ever imagine our paths in missions would not only cross but unite. Five years ago my brother joined (and helped begin) the Impact Africa team as Treasurer of our board as well as Chief Accountant and Overseer of our USA office….he got the lion’s share of math genes. He and his family are an integral part of the ministry happening here in Africa. It is an honor to labor together with my big brother, the one that teased me so many years ago, in this adventure.

So why this post about my big brother, Andy? Well for starters it is his birthday (and I am a good sister), not to mention the Baumruks are prone to tears and we have an unspoken tradition/competition of reducing each other to tears (in a good way) on special occasions. I also realized fond thoughts and “I love you’s” far too often go unspoken. Mostly, I just wanted to brag about my wonderful big brother who is greatly admired and respected by his little sister!

Happy Birthday Dee-Dee!

My Star-Center

Skyler is playing netball at school and they had their first match last week. It was not only their first game of the season it was Sky’s first team game in anything ever.

So Blake, Marci and I were off to cheer her on. Other than knowing it is a simple form of basketball and that they wear cute little skirts my netball knowledge is quite limited. Interestingly enough the sport originated by a Canadian immigrant to the USA but was first played in the UK. It later extended to many of the British Commonwealth countries of which SA is one.

Our ignorance of the rules did not hinder us in anyway from cheering, critiquing and coaching from the sidelines. Being familiar with basketball of course we yelled (quite loudly I might add) its terminology…things like “rebound girls”, “get open”- which turned to “spread out”, and “good hustle” (which we found out later was not even understood by my American daughter). I even threw in some football terminology---“great interception” which was uttered a lot as my Center (her position) star, Skyler, made quite a few! I also learnt (which is the British spelling by the way and frankly I don’t like it however it is fitting for the post) that “an interception” is correct netball verbiage.

I was quite impressed with my daughter’s skill in this new game. She really did very well and hustled til she was red-faced and exhausted. She is one of the only players that can roam the entire court and that she did!

It was a fun, new, SA learning exp. for me and Marci and we definitely proved to be the stereotypical, Loud Americans!

Why did I not post an in-the-action pic of Skyler in her cute little uniform? I pulled a Michelle and left my camera at home.

Friend of God

Did you have an imaginary friend when you were younger? I think I did but I can’t remember her name. I’m guessing it was Sally or Sue, assuming it was even a girl.

The other day Tori was outside swinging the swings….not on the swings but swinging the empty swings. I could see her chatting away.

Later I asked, "Were you swinging someone on the swings", thinking perhaps she has an imaginary friend.

Her reply, "Yep, I was swinging God."
Me: "You were playing with God?"
T: "Yes, He is my friend!"

Okay how cute is that? My daughter’s imaginary friend is God.

By the way, I completely understand that God is NOT imaginary and He really is there, around, etc....just go with the flow of a 3 year old and the proverbial imaginary friend thing.

No Substitute

Rich is back………

Okay so maybe not but it gave me a laugh when Marci (coworker) handed it to me after her trip to America.

The back cover states, “I’m Rich, dark and handsome." So far an ample description of my man!

It continues…..”I’ll even understand if you bite my head off after a bad day.” I changed that to…”after being gone for a month”.

Not even chocolate is a substitute for my main man (I’ve def. eaten enough the past 3 weeks to know) but it is nice to have something to bite the head off of (instead of the children) especially entering this last week of his absence!

The Countdown

One Week and my hubby will be back in Africa and most importantly back in my arms (and I am not letting go).

How did we fare this week? Well aside from another bout of tonsillitis this time with my youngest, our internet being in and out (with emphasis on the latter) for a week making any grasp with the outside world (including communication with my husband) and of course blogging very difficult, and gas prices rising to $4.15 per gallon we are doing well!

The "doing well" side of things: I’ve had some sweet encouragements, lots of play dates (sorry Heidi but that is what we call them here too) and even some adult conversations this week. To top it off, I have a “Girls night out” tonight with a dear friend whose hubby is also out of town.

All in all God has been very good to us and I am grateful…. and it does help knowing we only have 1 more week to go! YAHOO!!!

Happy Africa Anniversary

Since today & tomorrow mark 4 years starting a missionary career and relocating to South Africa, I thought I would share a glimpse of how it all began….

In July 2003, I was asked if I would travel to Thailand for a week and check on a short-term mission team ministering there. Having never been to Asia I quickly accepted. On my way to Thailand there was brief fuel stop in Tokyo, Japan. Due to the brevity of this stop, we were not allowed to deplane. While sitting on the runway, I heard a voice inside my head say, Thirteen years ago, Japan was your destination and Africa was the furthest place from your mind, now here you finally sit and it is Africa that has captured your heart.

You see it was thirteen years prior while attending college that I went on my first short-term mission trip. While in preparation for this trip, I actually prayed, “Lord, I will go anywhere but Africa”. I then signed up to go to Japan. Well, as I have shared in my profile this was the one of my, “Never say nevers”. Yes, you guessed it, my Japan trip was cancelled and I found myself on my way to South Africa.

I never planned on being a so called “missionary”. In fact, it was the last thing in the world I intended to do. When I signed up for the trip I did feel in my heart it was something the Lord asking me to do but I also saw it as a fun excursion (that was before they stuck me on the Africa team) and something on my “Christian to-do list” that I would be able to simply check off. I even recall boarding the airplane to return to America at the culmination of that first trip and wiping the sweat off my brow as if to say, “Phew, I am not called to be a missionary.”

I realized years later that it was on that first trip the “missionary seeds” were planted and for more than a decade they would be watered and cultivated. Fourteen years would pass, a long journey ensue and the dread of Africa would become a dream. During that time, I graduated college, married my missionary partner, who also at the time had no intention of living overseas, had my first 2 children, traveled all over the world on short-term mission trips, worked for a missions organization that taught me a love for God and His people and watched my heart break for the brown-skinned people living an ocean away.

Four years ago we arrived on African soil with 2 children, 3 suitcases, 6 trunks, 4 carry-ons and a mind full of wonder. Today, I sit in celebration of all the Lord has done in the short-time of being here, gratitude for the journey and all that I learned along the way and hope for many more years of living and ministering to those I dreamed of almost 2 decades ago!

It is a happy Africa Anniversary!

The Story Behind the Picture

It seems these precious girls have become our poster children as this photo has been used in a lot of our ministry materials besides being featured in my side bar. We just adore this photo!

This picture was captured 2 years ago or so; we were having a fun day for the children in a near by squatter camp (poverty striken area). Like so many of the children living in S. Africa these girls plight is a difficult one yet they seem to beam with joy!

Thought I'd share some of the beautiful faces we see everyday here in Africa. Aren't they precious?!

gala2 [ˈgaːlə, ˈgeilə; (American) ˈgeilə] noun
a meeting for certain sports
Example: a swimming gala

Weekend Trivia was....
Skyler was in a Gala at school; what activity did she participate in? The hint was that she wore a costume.

We had one right guess; swimming meets are called gala's here. And a bathing suit denotes a costume.

Can get a bit confusing for the American living abroad. When we were new to the country I almost sent Skyler to a birthday party dressed in her favorite princess costume after reading on the invitation: "bring costumes".

Gayla, to anwser your question, it is actually pronounced "Garla" as the "a" as we know it is pronounced with an "er" sound here.

Things that make you go hmmmm!

Another Week in Review

These reviews seem to give me an excuse for not posting everyday. And it is a guarantee to my readers that it will be my one and only long post of the week.

Obviously if you read yesterday's post you know we celebrated a special birthday in our household this week thus Blake being the featured post picture. (don't ask about the face paint as I'm not really sure what he was hoping for)

Tonsillitis and Sleeping Pills
Blake started a fever accompanied by a fiery red throat over the weekend. The prognosis, Tonsillitis, and home from school two days. He was ecstatic to be back romping around the school halls on Wednesday.

I thought Tori was coming down with it too when she fell asleep on the couch at 11:30 a.m. Monday morning and at 4:15 p.m. she was still sleeping. I later found out that she got into some sleeping pills that were in my nightstand. FORTUNATLY, they are homeopathic so a trip to the hospital for a stomach pump was not necessary. It did give me an idea though; if things get too much with Rich gone I can give the kids some Rescue (the pills) and expect to have a quiet afternoon. I’m only kidding or at least half kidding so don’t call child services on me!

Weekend Trivia
Skyler had a school Gala this week. What type of activity was she engaged in at the Gala?

1) Swimming- Swim Meet
2) Dancing- Dance contest
3) A Festival

I will give you a hint; she had to wear her costume.

In Ministry
Our outreach schedule is at a bit of a lull with Rich and Marci (co-worker) stateside and our newest staff member whom I will blog about soon (he is so cool) is in Zimbabwe setting up a youth conference we will do in September. He is also proposing to his girl! (He is Zimbabwean as is she) If all goes well, Rich and I will be attending an Zimbabwean wedding in March.

I am supposed to be writing our Impact Africa staff manual but supposed to would be the key words. My writing parameters require blocks of uninterrupted, quiet time. And for all the moms reading you know that is quite a rarity when children are involved!

Things I have learned while my husband is away….
I can put a Bionicle together, I pray a lot more for Rich when he is away than when he is here (sad I know) and for myself..hee! How to get the electric garage door open when the power is out and that I am ready for bed by 8:00 p.m.

1 week down…
...that Rich is away; 3 more to go! Thanks for your prayers; I definitely felt them this week!

Finally 6

My boy Blake is finally 6 years old. We have celebrated and celebrated but today is the actual day; I even waited to post until 10 a.m. CST to be legit.

He had his class party today. They do such a nice celebration for the birthdays with songs, prayer and the kids and teacher honor the birthday student.

It was neat to see so many of the kids in the class raise their hand to honor Blake. Most honored him for Joy, always so happy and fun and for being a nice friend to everyone. His teacher added for his faith in Jesus and his beautiful prayers.

I know I am bias but I agree with all that was said. Blake you are a wonderful son. So full of life, always a friend and not only do you love Jesus with your whole heart you are not afraid to show it! I am so proud of you and love you dearly!

And regardless of the masks you love to wear- whether it be Darth Vadar, Transformers, Superman, or Spiderman you will always be my precious little boy, Richard Blake!

Ode to My Trampoline

I fondly remember the early days of marriage. When we lived in a one bedroom shoebox most people referred to as an apartment. It was so small we could vacuum the entire place from one outlet. Our furniture consisted of a couch and love seat that someone gave us, our dining table was moving boxes covered with a table cloth and 2 bar stools and our bedroom furniture was Rich’s black lacquer groovin’ 70’s stuff from high school. Yea, I know what you’re thinking---it had to be love.

The worst of it was our bed. It was a double mattress Rich somehow gained from his college dorm apartment. After 2 nights with my 6’2” man, sinking in the middle of this horrid mattress we decided love just wasn’t enough….we needed Sealy!

Our first major purchase as a married couple was a wave-less water mattress. Hey, we were newly weds what did you expect we’d get…..hee!

Thankfully we’ve outlasted most of those early day furnishings…especially the lacquer dresser with brass trim and gargantuan round mirror. Everything except the water mattress. It has been with us the last 13 years; that is until last week.

Over the years our beloved mattress has had a few leaks. Early last week we had yet another. I asked Rich, so to be prepared, to show me how to patch it if it sprung a leak again but while he is away (since it will be for soooo long). He replied, “It will be fine.” You know what they say about famous last words…that night as I retired to bed we did not just have a leak but a flood. We spent the next hour draining the entire bed, had to sleep in separate rooms (hey, what’s one more night away…ugh) and in the morning purchased a brand new mattress.

The other day as I snuck away for a mini-nap (yea right) Tori promptly came to find me. As I lifted her up on the bed with me she uttered, “Mommy, you get a new trampoline?”
Um yea she was referring to the mattress…..

And now we know why the last one had so many leaks!

I do miss my old trampoline!

Sunset Review

As the sun sets on the end of a week (well on this side of the globe anyway) I thought I’d post a review of some of the highlights of my week…

In the Dark?
Let’s see since our 17 hour power cut and state of emergency announcement about the SA’s electricity shortage we’ve only had 1 cut. Guess that is good news; praying it continues (the lack of cuts not the shortage)

Dateless
Rich and I had a wonderful early Valentine dinner…it was exquisite! However I will be dateless for the next MONTH as he left for America on V-Day.

Arachnophobia
Skyler is studying spiders in school and has been mesmerized by it. I’ve learned that we have a large population of spiders outside and inside my house as she and her brother have successfully captured and caged many. Hoping this study will end soon so my flashbacks to Arachnophobia the movie cease.

Did I mention that my husband left me for a whole month?

Daniel
I started Beth Moore’s study on Daniel with a group of ladies who are also in ministry. It was only the first lesson and I already LOVE it!

Rich is gone…oh yea, I mentioned that didn’t I…but did I mention that he will be gone 6 weeks over the course of a 3 month period?

Quote of the week
“Mom you are the best cooker in the whole world.” Blake
Amazing what one can do with chicken nuggets, pizza and spaghetti!

Mi hubbyo es Gone-O (Good thing I live in Africa as my Espanol es muy mal!)

Weekend Trivia
In South Africa traffic lights are called robots and you put stuff in the boot of your bakkie (trunk of your car).

29 days and counting
I know I sound bitter that my husband is gone but I am not. I don’t like it nor does he but we both know it is for a very good reason and in it we will find God’s grace. And I just realized he has been gone 24 hours so 1 day down…..29 more to go!

Okay please pray!!!

My Transformer has transformed into a 6 year old boy!

We had Blake’s birthday party this weekend and can you guess the theme? Let me give you a hint….

Technically his birthday falls on the 21st however if we wanted Papa Prime around we’d have to celebrate early. He has transformed into a world traveler as of late.

Blake and his 9 Autobots enjoyed a myriad of themed games and of course a visit from a rather large boy they termed, Decepticon. That would be Rich with a bad guy mask on….his fate entailed 9 boys and Tori bombarding him with water balloons. I must admit it was rather amusing to watch!

My favorite part was watching our 3 year old girl, Tori play every game, traipse around with all the boys and adorn herself in an Optimus Prime mask. She was determined not to miss out and if it meant doing boy things than so be it.

Got me thinking, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to transform into something else whenever you wanted...a car or a really skinny body…hee. What would you transform into?

What is my Tori doing........

A) Preparing for missionary travels to Arabic countries?
B) Hiding in her pajama drawer?
C) Undergoing a new form of discipline?
E) None of the above; it really isn’t Tori but an imposter with pretty blue eyes.

A tweenie weekend

This weekend, I joined thousands of mothers and their tween daughters across America (and the globe) in attending the 3D Hannah Montana-Miley Cyrus movie concert.

I must admit I am not a Disney fan. For all the junk they throw at our kids I am grateful most of it does not reach the far corners of the globe—Africa anyway, but the little bit of Hannah we get I’ve been okay with.

Gayla my thoughts of this 3D-movie experience was very different than your U2 post and I admit if the drummer sent my daughter any I love you messages I’d be writing a disgruntled parent letter instead of this post. (hee)

I was so thankful to be viewing this sitting down while eating popcorn than live viewing in a stadium. Can you imagine the high pitched screams from thousands of little girls…yea nails on a chalk board would be soothing in comparison!

Other differences than viewing it in the States would be….we did stand in a long line but it was for concessions and that was due to only one worker at the counter. We also only paid $3 for our movie tickets and an additional $3 for a large popcorn and 2 slush puppies. The movie was sold out but I booked tickets online 3 days ago and there were plenty of seats and it only showed at 1 movie theatre in all of Johannesburg. Furthermore no one dressed up as Hannah Montana and there were not any fathers wearing high heels in attendance (gotta see the movie or news on that comment).

I am pretty sure a rhinestone studded microphone stand will be added to Skyler’s Christmas list after seeing the movie. Secretly, I wouldn’t mind having one around (it was pretty cool) so I can practice my great (HA!) vocal skills after everyone retires to bed.

So as you see I am a missionary in Africa but I am also still a mom with an 8 year old girl…..and a happy one at that! Can’t remember who said it but I guess it is the best of both worlds.
