Our Worth in Rubies

I have a Pastor friend from the Chicago area. He was studying for this Sunday's, Mother's Day service and shared some of his insights. I found his research on Women's Worth quite interesting. He shares...

Proverbs 31:10
"A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. "

So, I decided to find out how much rubies were worth. I thought you might find this calculation interesting:
· There are 141.7 carats in an ounce
· There are 16 ounces in a pound
· If the average wife weighed in at 120 lbs then she would weigh 272,064 carats
· A particular ruby sold for $425,000 per carat

That means that the minimum worth of a 120lb wife with noble character is $115,627,200,000
That’s $115.6 Billion! That’s the minimum worth, if she has noble character.

But the Bible says her worth is far more! How much is far more than one? Maybe 10? OK, it could be a lot more than 10 but let’s start there. So, the minimum worth of a 120lb wife of noble character is at least $1.15Trillion!

Pastor Joe concluded with a challenge to men, "I think we need to start treating our wives better!"

My conclusion is a challenge to women...Perhaps we should spend less time consumed with being younger and thinner, pursuing the latest and greatest fashion, comparing ourselves to everyone else and spend more time daily pursuing noble character.

I'm sold!

A nice post! I have checked your calculations using the metric system and can verify your estimate that 120 pounds is indeed about the number of carats you indicate.

What is highly disputable is the price per carat. At 425,000 dollars per carat, you have quoted the highest price ever paid!. As you are sure to know, the value of a gemstone depends on a variety of factors besides its weight (quality, cut, etc.) A more typical price for a good ruby would be about 300 dollars per carat, and you can get those of lesser quality for next to nothing on eBay.

Of course, in biblical terms, a "wife of noble character" is one who is obedient to her husband.

I look forward to your re-evaluation ;-)

Maalie, thanks for your re-calculations. Where these were not my calculations I find yours even more entriguing.

Isn't it just like the King of Kings, the One who fearfully and wonderfully made each and every woman to compare her worth not to the lesser quality but no doubt to the highest?! To think our worth is far more than the Highest price ever paid for a ruby....WOW, what a God.

And isn't it just like humanbeings to de-value and bring to "human standards" that which God deems so valueable?!

What a great way to look at that scripture. Thanks for passing this on. ps. it is so intriguing to me to hear you talk about the Fall activities as we start into the Spring thunderstorm season. Sometimes we forget what the other half of the world is experiencing. :-)
