Our 'Nevers'

Prior to having kids I was quite judgmental. I can’t remember how many times I uttered the phrase “I’ll never do that or let my kid’s do that” while watching other parents dealing with their children. For those of you nodding, Uh Huh and waving your bibles saying “preach it sister” you’ll probably also agree you’ve done all the things you would never do with your kids….and more!

Well confession time….. here is one more of the things on my long lists of I will never that I recently did. Number 56 on the list was absolutely no Superhero, Hello Kitty, Barbie or Nick Jr. character bedding and bedroom paraphernalia of any kind. Okay so Nick Jr wasn’t on the list as I did not even know such a channel existed prior to kids. Anyway you get my drift. Toys, occasional t-shirts, underwear and PJ’s of such characters were okay but an entire bedroom outfit…no way! How tacky…hee!

The girl’s room has always been a pretty yellow and Pottery barn green with PB butterfly bedding and curtains to boot. Blake received the safari room with stuffed animal trophy heads, faux fur duvets, a cheetah throw rug and denim blue coordinating sheets and curtaining. Adorable right! I thought so. Love the trophy heads…have a look...

Well a friend of mine just gave me ALL of her 9 year old son’s Spiderman bedding, curtains, huge picture, and a rug for Blake. The result...you tell me what 5 year old boy would not be ecstatic?! So out with the trophy heads (boo-hoo) and in with Spidey.

My thought if it makes him happy and it is free what is one more Never turned Did It!

What are the nevers that you have given into or if you don’t have kids as you watch those of us that do what are your nevers? Be honest…this is a safe blog space!

After watching my nieces and nephews prior to having my own tribe of wild animals, I remember thinking all sorts of "I WILL NEVER" thoughts. I used to verbalize them. I then had kids and realized that there is some strange ooze that runs through a child's veins and some of their behaviors can not be controled by mom and dad (SHOCKING I KNOW!).

I still have tons of "I WILLL NEVER" thoughts, but I am smarter now, I don't verbalize them.

I guess this is one time when I believe the "name it claim it" theology might work. Every time I have said, "you won't see my kids doing that...." they do.

I think it's God's way of reminding us who is really in control:-)

And I think you're off the hood since it was FREE. That totally doesn't count.

"I will NEVER buy a piece of candy or a cookie to keep my child quiet in a grocery store."

Never turned did it.

And will do it again...

I am sorry about the gorgeous safari theme, though! What a wonderful room. So sad that Spidey tops it in Blake's books. But my boys are the same. Oi vay. What's a mommy to do.

I LOVE the safari theme and wanted to do the same when my boys combined rooms. Where did you find the great animal heads?? Love them!
I have also learned to never say the "I will never comments". One that my husband and I said before we had kids was, "We will NEVER let our kids sleep with us." After many, many sleepless months with Hunter, we gave in and all enjoyed some much need sleep. :)

I said I would never let Alex eat chocolate.

I've eatten too many words to remember. I try not to make those emphatic statements any more.

Well, I can't think of any off the top of my head, but EMily didn't get sugar or salt until she was nearly two (yes, including her first birthday...no cake), but with Ethan, all were off... it just didn't work the second time... and as guilty as I have felt at times, I just try not to dwell on it too much!

LOVE the heads... it's too bad our kids just don't have the appreciation for taste that we do, right???

OH! I just thought of one! I remember thinking (if not verbalizing) that I would never let my kids get away with such and such... I think we do a good job, but I am also sure we let them get away with things we don't want to let them get away with...

Consistency is our friend, and our foe, sometimes...harder to do than to want to do...

I will never let my kids pierce their noses or belly buttons...hahaha! Guess when they are 21 and 18 that all goes out the window. I was pretty tough on Linds and Lee....then came Jenna and all of life changed! Many things that I said I would never do flew by the wayside.

I love all your kids bedding and rooms. cute photos.

I have eaten too many of my words also. I remember seeing peoples kids being naughty and running around and saying I will never let my kids do that. And sure enough they are doing some of those things that I thought I will never.......

Thanks for your ccomment on my blog. You have a great sense of humor. I love that! I'd say holding computers. Do you agree?

I'm afraid to find out what I will do which I have said "I will never" to. And as you know, being a teacher only provides more opportunities to add to the list! I guess I'll see...

When is your crusade? I guess it didn't work for us to visit in March. Is there a good time for you? Maybe even on our way out of Malawi in May? Let us know...

Hmmmm... honestly, I can't remember those "I'll never" statements even thought I've made them. I think I chose to forget or maybe those were the brain cells that got fried from being pregnant 6 times.

You're stuffed safari trophies actually made me laugh harder than the spider man digs. I'm not saying I didn't LOVE it... it just isn't something I've ever seen in a kids room. Maybe the Lord was helping you to stop teaching your kids that poaching was a GOOD thing. HAHAH sorry.

Too funny, Michelle. Could have said "I told you so".

Oh! Thought of one more: "I will never let my child watch hours of TV, even if it's educational programming."

I like your mom's "I told you so."
