In-laws

Now there is a word that has gotten a lot of press over the years and kept stand-up comedians full of material. They say when you marry you are not only marrying your spouse you are marrying their family. Well when I said “I do” to Mr. Tall Dark and Handsome, I did pretty well in the in-law category too.

Rich’s mom (aka Grandma Jackie) and her 100 lbs (to the tee) of luggage arrived yesterday! She was greeted at the airport with screams of joy and big hugs from Skyler and Blake. Tori reluctant at first carefully contemplated if she should follow suit. Seeing her siblings each received handfuls of candy she quickly joined the welcome fest. Is there a grandparent's manual somewhere mandating sweets and loud toys for the grandkids?

After the long trip home from the airport, albeit we only live 15 miles away, due to a directionally challenged driver the unpacking began. Let’s just say if our support ever runs dry we have ample supply of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese and fruit snacks to sustain us for a while.

I am so thankful not only for the extra pair of loving hands to help while Rich is away but to have such wonderful in-laws in my life. I am blessed with two spectacular families!

So it is Grandparent's Day here (Grandpa is accompanying Rich on his way back) everyday for the next 21 days. Or would it more aptly be called, "Grandkid's Day"?!

Anyone know of a safe sedative I can give my kids to balance out the 3 week sugar high?

I think that is spectacular that your husband's mom is there to help. As a mom, it is so easy to turn to our own mother's and forget the wisdom present in our mother-in-law.

Have a wonderful visit and take the opportunity to spend 5 extra minutes in the bathroom while they are occupied with Granny:-)

Your picture reminded me of when Rod and I lived in Peru. Whenever anyone came to visit, they had to bring US food. My favorite was the 20 pound block of cheddar cheese and the 10 pound bag of chocolate chips. So, I know first hand how excited you must have been to get the box of food.

It is so great that your mother-in-law is there to help you right now. What a blessing! Make sure you take some alone time for yourself- guilt free!

How nice for you to have some help while your husband is away! That is wonderful, and I love to hear such loving things spoken about in-laws. That is truly a blessing!

Good luck with the sugar-high!

I know about the noisy toys, but I had forgotten that grandparents come supplied with candy. No wonder Alex plays with his noisy toys non-stop for days. Have fun at your house.

We did get to see Rich, and would you please say Thank You to Skyler for hte Valentine?? (There is one coming back to her!)

As we watched your Impact Africa video, I teared up every time Skyler came on the screen... I think these two have such a sweet friendship...I really hope that it lasts forever... when Kevin mentioned that you guys need more staff there, Emily said, "well, let's go!!" I am glad these two lovely girls have brought our families together!!

Rich's mom is BEAUTIFUL! Also, so adorable, Skyler looks just like her dad in that picture...I remember when she was a baby and my favorite part of watching her was when I got to get her from when she awoke from her nap. She would slither/crawl, whatever her way to the edge of her crib and be waiting for me so sweetly. They have all grown up so fast and I remember the days when her and Emily and Mikaela were all like cradle babies together. I hope God continues to bless me and let me watch as they each grow up to be the beautiful women that they were destined to be.

Glad Jackie arrived safe and sound. 100 pounds? Did she have to pay for overweight? Oh, you probably meant all total hey?
Of course Grandmas need to give noisy toys and sugar (I'm jealous). Let them splurge - it doesn't happen that often.
By the way you probably won't agree with this as Andy and Kelly didn't bu they had a doctor on TV the other day that said it's a myth that kids get hyper from sugar.
Have a great time and say hi to Jackie for me.

You are so blessed. My mother-in-law told my husband that he could do so much better than me. She has no relationship with our girls. The way I see it, it's her loss. Thank God for this wonderful gift in your life. Enjoy your time with her.

Michelle, I agree that the similarities, or at least common interests and tendencies make me wish that you were my next door neighbor. Maybe someday we'll have to plan a meeting place for all of these blogger women to get together! Like a blogger girls gone wild weekend:-) Maybe in Vegas...sound good?

I'm so glad you enjoy your in-laws. I, too, married into a wonderful family (the family was one of the reasons I chose Bruce). I hope you all enjoy the time with them to the fullest. I'd recommend making the kids run some laps around your house or something for 20 minutes after each sugar intake.

Wait a minute! I don't know why I didn't notice this before. Did your in-laws bring the Start Wars stuff for your kids? Alex loves Star Wars. He would probably love your in-laws too.

Choc chips are on my America Must Have's too. I received 2 huge Sams bags this time around.

Heidi I like your idea of a blogger girls gone wild idea...can you set that up. hee

Yes, lots of SW stuff came in our 'shipment' as next week Blake is having a SW b-day party. He eats, sleeps and breathes SW.

Lily..your comment brought tears to my eyes...thank you!

We have had 3 hired men work for us on the farm that were from South Africa so I hear you on stuff people send you. I couldn't believe all the things they don't have there. Riann's constant request was for homemade chocolate chip cookies. He had never had them or heard of them. I couldn't believe how many that guy could eat. He also loved brownies. I had to try to translate the receipes for him to take back for his mom. That was interesting.
I also know what an ordeal and expense it is to travel there so you truly are blessed. Enjoy your new stuff and your visitors.

What great in-laws! Can there be a better gift when you're overseas than American food?! : )

About the time the grandparents get your kids fixed on their sugar-high, is the perfect time to let them have some quality time alone with the kids while you go do the things YOU WANT TO DO! Afterall, they won't be able to see them once the 3 weeks comes to an end.
