My 5 year old played Rugga this year which I explain as ‘little league’ for Rugby. There is no contact or so I thought at this age, they play barefoot (a bit strange to me) and just 30 minutes a week brings my son extreme joy.
Yesterday Rich and I attended Blake’s end of the year Rugga performance. It was really cute. Things started out tame…simple races and ball skills with a rugby ball but by the end there was full on tackling….in all fairness it was still very tame.
Blake was quite the star…not bad for an American for sure! He hit the tackle bag with so much force that an “ohhh” was heard by the other parental units watching. And he was 1 of 2 left standing in a game requiring the participants to run from one end of the field to the other without being tackled.
At the finale they were each awarded a certificate of participation. I was particularly amused at the American football clip art used on the rugby certificate.
I learned two things: My American son is going to fair well at South African sports and that the coach has not mastered the fine art of google.

It's almost a rugby ball. I love it that your son is playing. That picture of him creaming the bag is great!!
Rugga sounds like fun for little boys! I can see why Blake loves it!
You have braggin' rights for sure!!
Susan
BAREFOOT?! Just what Grandma wanted to hear (especially this one who never went barefoot or let you kids go barefoot).
That is just too funny about the football on the certificate.
Of course he'll do well - he's my Grandson isn't he?
Mom
I love the intense look on his face. He's in it to win...or conqueor something at least.
Be proud Mom, you have every right!
too too cute. LOVE it! I am so sad we missed each other. I DID get the wrong day - just sitting there waiting for you guys, only to find out from Susan, that you had been doing the same thing the day before. So glad you got to meet her - isn't she so kind and wonderful?
Very cute! Barefoot would make me a little leery though. Just found your comment on my blogger...I don't use it very often....still love my xanga journal (www.xanga.com/africanqueen). The flight went well.....long but Andrew did very well. We had some moments...and yes I did use benadryl and was wishing we had gotten that extra seat! True to our flying nature, the flight was packed! Glad it's over though and I don't have to look at another plane till February!
brag away...you've earned it. or they have, or whatever! we love it.
Looks like he is having a fun time. Fun pictures.
We love hearing about your kids! You really need to show that coach how to google. I was laughing just reading that. Who doesn't know how to google?!
barefoot??? really? that is both funny and a bit scary... but he looks like he can handle it! :-)
